Rotary International Comments:

Rotarians in Haiti are laying the groundwork for the next phase of the recovery process: sustainable restoration projects that will enable long-term rehabilitation to begin.

The Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, a donor advised fund set up by The Rotary Foundation, has raised US$1.3 million to help rebuild the country’s infrastructure, which was shattered by the 12 January earthquake that killed up to 300,000 people and left 1.2 million more homeless.

“We are now at the crossroads as we move from immediate relief mode to sustainable development,” says Past RI Director Barry Rassin, an account holder for the fund. “What is important is that we work with the needs defined by Haiti and always keep in mind that our help should strengthen their economy and not detract from it.”

District 7020, which includes Haiti, has flown more than 100 planes filled with medical equipment, food, water, clothes, toys, and tents into the cities of Pignon and Port-de-Paix. The district’s own account for recovery efforts has reached $400,000, which will be used for sustainable restoration projects.

District leaders say they will provide more information to clubs and districts about how they can work with the donor advised fund as soon as specific details of the recovery plan are approved by the Haiti Task Force and cleared with the Haitian government. Those interested in applying for a grant from the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund should complete a grant application form, which will be available on the District 7020 website.

QUIP OF THE WEEK:

A father’s advice to his son:

“My teacher is really giving me a tuff time” Little Johnny was telling his father.
“Handle it this way Johnny,” his father advised. “Take special care with your personal appearance and attire, pay attention in class and do your assignments and homework promptly.” “I really don’t think that’ll help Dad,” Johnny sighed. “She hissed at me during study break that she’s 3 weeks overdue.”

Rotary International Comments:

The Interact Club of La Jolla High School, California, USA, is making a difference by helping to build new homes for some of the poorest residents of Tijuana, Mexico.

Interactors and the sponsor Rotary Club of La Jolla have collaborated with Project Mercy, a San Diego-based nonprofit that brings groups to Mexico for a day to build simple single-family houses.

“This is a unique opportunity for the students to understand the incredible difference they can make in communities in need,” says Rotarian Calvin Mann, the La Jolla club‚Äôs youth service committee chair. “It’s a universally good experience.”

Through Project Mercy, Interactors have built 11 homes for families in the last three years. A group of about 15 to 20 Interactors, parents, and Rotarians can build a home in one day. Interactors raise $3,500 per home through school fundraising activities and Rotarian contributions.

Project Mercy works with communities to identify needy families, many of whom live in flimsy shacks with dirt floors and tarp roofs. The organization hires local construction workers to pour concrete foundations, then brings in volunteers to build the homes.

Rotary International comments: As members of the Rotary Club of Chicago celebrated Rotary’s 105th anniversary at a downtown hotel on 23¬†February, the city’s historic Wrigley Building was illuminated in the background with an urgent message: End Polio Now.

The Wrigley Building joined several other iconic landmarks worldwide, each lit with an anniversary message or the three words¬†representing Rotary’s commitment to rid the world of the crippling childhood disease.

Joining Chicago Rotarians at the lighting ceremony were Illinois Governor Pat Quinn; the Reverend Jesse Jackson, president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition; Dr. Ciro de Quadros, executive vice president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute; James Galloway, U.S. assistant surgeon general; and RI General Secretary Ed Futa.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Deb has Polio Plus stickers for $1.00 a piece. We are up to $350+ on the goal to reach $1,000.

Rotary International Comments:

You’re almost there, was the message reporter Penny LeGate gave to district governors-elect during the 2010 International Assembly in an update on Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio.

LeGate, a news anchor and reporter for KIRO-TV in Seattle, Washington, USA, has traveled with Rotarians to countries such as Ethiopia and India to participate in and report on National Immunization Days (NIDs).

“At this time in history, you’re in the home stretch, you’re walking the last mile, but it’s not proving to be easy,” she said during the fourth plenary session.

Since 1985, when Rotary launched PolioPlus, the volunteer arm of the global partnership to eradicate polio, the number of polio-endemic countries has declined from 125 to 4 — Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan — and the number of new polio cases each year has been
reduced from 350,000 to 2,000.

Rotary International Comments:

Rotary launches PolioPlus to fund the operational, social mobilization, and training efforts required to eradicate polio. It is unveiled at the annual RI Convention, where Dr. Albert Sabin, who discovered the oral polio vaccine, urges Rotarians to maintain their commitment to immunization around the world. Sabin warns that without action, there could be an additional eight million cases of residual paralytic polio worldwide by 2005.
