Past District Governor passes at 87

Our dear friend and long-time member, Edward F. Kavina, passed away this weekend at the age of 87.

Ed, a retired florist, whose business on Cermak Road survived for more than 50 years first joined our club in 1959.

Ed also served his country during World War II as a Hospital Corpsman attached to the Marines including service on Guadalcanal.

He rose through the ranks of the Rotary Club of Cicero, beginning with Sergeant At Arms for the 1960-61 year and then served as Director, Club Officer, President (1956-66), and as Chairman of the District Conference held at Lake Lawn Lodge in the 1970’s.  He was elected District Governor and served during the 1977-78 term.  He was very active in the District attending many district conferences and international conventions.  He was instrumental in the formation of the District’s College of Past District Governors and served as its Chairman for many years.

He retired from business several years ago and remained active in Rotary until health issues forced his retirement from weekly meetings that he normally was religious about attending.  Ed had over 40 years of perfect attendance occasionally going to more than one meeting a week.  For years he was perhaps the best known member of the Rotary Club of Cicero.

Our sympathies go to his loyal wife, Ruth, his right arm, and his two children, Jim and Judy.  Services were arranged at Hallowell and James in Countryside.
