Rotary International Comments:

Rotary International comments: As members of the Rotary Club of Chicago celebrated Rotary’s 105th anniversary at a downtown hotel on 23 February, the city’s historic Wrigley Building was illuminated in the background with an urgent message: End Polio Now.

The Wrigley Building joined several other iconic landmarks worldwide, each lit with an anniversary message or the three words representing Rotary’s commitment to rid the world of the crippling childhood disease.

Joining Chicago Rotarians at the lighting ceremony were Illinois Governor Pat Quinn; the Reverend Jesse Jackson, president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition; Dr. Ciro de Quadros, executive vice president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute; James Galloway, U.S. assistant surgeon general; and RI General Secretary Ed Futa.

The Cicero Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary, and one visiting Rotarian greeted the Mayor of Montemorelos, Mexico and his wife. The Rotary Club donated 250 dictionaries to the 3rd grade of the Montemorelos school. One of the Rotarians, Rosa Ibarra, drove the books from Chicago to their destination. The Mayor pledged to the Club to meet with the Rotary Club in his city of 72,000 and work on projects between clubs that would benefit both communities. Many town officials of Cicero attended the meeting including Dennis Raleigh, Town Trustee, who is a Rotarian. The event was covered by two local Hispanic newspapers.

Bulletin – January 12, 2010

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Deb has Polio Plus stickers for $1.00 a piece. We are up to $350+ on the goal to reach $1,000.

Rotary International Comments:

You’re almost there, was the message reporter Penny LeGate gave to district governors-elect during the 2010 International Assembly in an update on Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio.

LeGate, a news anchor and reporter for KIRO-TV in Seattle, Washington, USA, has traveled with Rotarians to countries such as Ethiopia and India to participate in and report on National Immunization Days (NIDs).

“At this time in history, you’re in the home stretch, you’re walking the last mile, but it’s not proving to be easy,” she said during the fourth plenary session.

Since 1985, when Rotary launched PolioPlus, the volunteer arm of the global partnership to eradicate polio, the number of polio-endemic countries has declined from 125 to 4 — Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan — and the number of new polio cases each year has been
reduced from 350,000 to 2,000.

Rotary International Comments:

Rotary launches PolioPlus to fund the operational, social mobilization, and training efforts required to eradicate polio. It is unveiled at the annual RI Convention, where Dr. Albert Sabin, who discovered the oral polio vaccine, urges Rotarians to maintain their commitment to immunization around the world. Sabin warns that without action, there could be an additional eight million cases of residual paralytic polio worldwide by 2005.

Rapid HIV test: 70 cents. The Rotary clubs of Shanghai and Fremont, Calif., USA, teamed up with pioneering virologist David Ho in 2006 to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the virus in Yunnan, which accounts for a third of China’s reported AIDS cases – by far the highest of all provinces.

Prospective members should be introduced to Rotary’s history, ideals, and service and leadership
opportunities. All members should be encouraged to bring in new members to the club. A prospective member who has been introduced to Rotary by enthusiastic Rotarians and is informed about the club’s projects before joining is more likely to become involved and remain active.

QUIP OF THE WEEK:

Sending out some cards…A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, “I’m sending out one thousand Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asks the man.

“I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replies.

Rotary International Comments:

Did you know, Itzhak Perlman, at age three, Perlman heard a concert on the radio and asked his father for a violin. Months later, he contracted polio and lost the use of his legs. He walks with crutches and performs while seated. Throughout his career, he’s maintained a rigorous travel schedule, appearing at venues far beyond the concert halls of the United States and Western Europe. In 1987, he joined a groundbreaking tour with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Hungary and Poland, and three years later
performed in the orchestra’s first concert in the Soviet Union. He toured China and India in 1994. Born in Tel Aviv in 1945, Perlman debuted at Carnegie Hall at age 17. Today, he’s one of the world’s best known and most honored classical musicians, often described as a “superstar.” He’s garnered four Emmy Awards and 15 Grammy Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

The worst thing about Halloween is, of course, candy corn. Candy corn is the only candy in the history of America that’s never been advertised. And there’s a reason — all of the candy corn that was ever made was made in 1911.
